Wegman’s Mold Incident

Saturday, July 7th, 2007

I worked at Wegman’s in Cherry Hill, NJ from January 2, 2007 to approx July 2007. When I started work I was my heaviest I had ever weighed at 175lbs. After starting there it seemed as if I had a cold that I could not get rid of. I thought it was my allergies because they were similar symptoms. As time continued I became more sick and began to see the doctor. After visiting the doctor and getting medicine the problem did not seem to go away. I had visited the doctor several times with several different medicines after each visit. Then I began to become very sick especially the last 2-3 months. I had lost over 30lbs; had no appetite, no energy, and more. Also, my body began to reject medicines and food. I could not figure out what was wrong and did not say much to anyone. I started analyzing everything in my life and lifestyle. Then, I had a week off Wegman’s and began to feel a little better after about 5 days off. I actually ate an entire steak, which was the most I had eaten in a while. Then after returning back to Wegman’s I got sick again. I worked in a cold prep room (big refrigerator room) that is kept at 45 degrees. The air was/is not ventilated properly so it is constantly being recycled. In addition, there is noticeable mold growing on the air units and ceilings. I also do home inspections so I am very knowledgeable about looking for these things. I know the dangers of these conditions. I brought it to their attention and it has all been documented and I even went to their doctor who said I am pretty bad shape. I had never been so sick in my life and I really looked like crap. I lost a lot of weight and became weak and always tired. It is also affected my work with our other companies

I have suffered from severe allergies and was treated for them with allergy shots for most of my life. I had an allergy test when I was younger and one thing I was allergic to was mold. So these symptoms would be true as in my situation my body is being poisoned by the mold.

So it was determined I was affected by mold poisoning and could not work in the food areas at Wegman’s. I had to leave the company as I did not want to stock shelves. I had to recover from mold poisoning and the depression that went along with it… I was in bad shape and probably could have died. I had lost over 30 lbs, was weak, and emotionally distraught.

Knowing mold is a new problem and there are not many facts about the risks and dangers. Most symptoms don’t appear for years down the road and this could really have messed me up.

Next time you go to Wegman’s and eat the prepared foods just think of the possibility of mold being present in your food.
